WHAT IF THEY ARE
CABBAGES
Stage fright is a psychological condition experienced by many in today's society. Drawing on the common saying "Imagine the audience as cabbages, and you won’t feel afraid", this work replaces human audiences with cabbages to explore how such non-human entities, devoid of human characteristics, influence the speaker’s mental state. Simultaneously, the work incorporates psychological research to examine the relationship between the degree of speech anxiety and factors such as audience feedback and audience identity.
Using VR technology, the project creates a dehumanised, independent space and integrates leaf-inspired sculptural installations, inviting participants to engage in an interactive experiment.
The overall design of the installation mimics the growth pattern of cabbages, with upright cabbage-like leaves wrapping around the audience. A yellow circular beanbag is placed at the center, creating the sensation of being nestled within the heart of a cabbage. The design emphasizes rounded shapes and soft, non-aggressive textures to establish a relaxing and welcoming environment. The lighting is gentle and dim, with a spotlight directed downward onto the central beanbag. When the audience enters and sits, it simulates the effect of stage lighting during a performance.
